SCA and OSHA Renew Partnership in National Alliance Program

On Friday, March 6th, 2009 SCA renewed the Association's National Alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in a signing ceremony at OSHA Headquarters in Washington, DC.  Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Donald G. Shalhoub was present.

Over 6 years ago, SCA and OSHA signed a National Alliance to promote safe and healthful working conditions for shipyard employees.  The Alliance focuses on using OSHA's and SCA's collective expertise to help advance a culture of injury and illness prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge and promoting safe and healthful working conditions for shipyard employees.

This new two-year Alliance will continue promoting safe and healthful working conditions for shipyard employees."SCA welcomes the opportunity to renew our National Alliance with OSHA. For the past 6 years, the SCA/OSHA partnership through the Alliance Program has provided the tools necessary to promote workplace safety and health initiatives important to the shipbuilding and repair industry, " said Steve Welch, SCA Chairman and CEO of Todd Pacific Shipyards. "Most recently, the Alliance has produced a series Safety Alerts that offer important compliance assistance on key topics to our safety professionals. We also value OSHA's consistent participation at our biannual Safety Seminars. SCA looks forward to another productive two years."

“Our six-year alliance collaboration has produced products that provide recommendations and guidance for eliminating hazards experienced by shipyard workers,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Donald G. Shalhoub. “Together, we will work to advance OSHA’s core mission of protecting the health of workers across the country through enforcement, training and outreach services.”

The Alliance Program’s mission is to provide the shipbuilding industry with information and guidance that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to shipyard health and safety hazards, such as electrical, welding/hotwork, and ergonomics, and in promoting hearing conservation.
