Over the past 2 years, SCA members have worked with the U.S. EPA through our Sector Strategies Partnership, and with the American Shipbuilding Association (ASA), to develop an initiative aimed at collecting environmental metrics from shipyards. We are pleased to announce the release of our aggregated data which is the culmination of the first year of reporting. For the first time, important environmental data has been collected and released providing a picture of the shipbuilding and repair sector’s environmental footprint and a representative look at the small to mid-tier shipyard’s role within it.

This voluntary project, called the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Environmental Metrics Initiative, was designed to encourage and build capacity among shipyards to measure and report on key aspects of their own environmental footprint in order to inform continuous improvement and support accountability and transparency in the sector.  Fifteen shipyards, representing more than 90% of U.S. shipyard operations, committed to reporting key environmental footprint data to their trade associations (SCA and ASA) on an annual basis.  The Environmental Metrics Initiative is the starting point for building broader and stronger environmental stewardship efforts throughout the shipbuilding and ship repair sector.

Participating shipyards reported the following information: particulate matter emissions; greenhouse gas emissions (using the GHG Reporting Tool developed for the shipyard environment); hazardous and non-hazardous waste generation; a summary of stormwater BMPs in use during the reporting period; and whether or not an environmental management system (EMS) is in use, third party certified or under development. All information was blinded.
