2007’s Safety Awards were announced at the Shipbuilders Council of America April 7, 2008 General Membership Meeting. These awards are a result of SCA member shipyard’s commitment to safety and participation in a quarterly Injury and Illness Survey distributed by the Council.
Congratulations to the recipients of the 2007 SCA Award for Excellence in Safety - Conrad Industries, Inc; Bollinger Shipyards, Inc.; and Detyens Shipyards, Inc. The Award for Excellence is Safety is given to those shipyards that complete the survey all four quarters, do not have a recordable fatality for the year, and have an end-of-year Total Recordable Industry Rate (TRIR) that is below the aggregate SCA TRIR.
Congratulations to the recipients of the 2007 SCA Award for Improvement in Safety – Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Inc; Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding; Marine Hydraulics International; and VT Halter Marine Group. The Award for Improvement in Safety is given to those shipyards that complete the survey all four quarters, do not have a recordable fatality for the year, and reduce their TRIR by 10% or more year-on-year.
Overall, SCA members contributed to SCA combined TRIR of 5.86 (our lowest rate ever), which is almost half the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ industry rate of 10.7. SCA is proud of all our members’ commitment to safety.
